Grandpa's Secret: When I was young, My Grandpa used coconut oil everyday in the morning before & after bath externally. His skin shines/glows every time when I look on his hand /legs (WOW!) He is a farmer and goes to farm land for cultivation. This coconut oil protects his skin from environment damages Also, I used to get a smell of coconut from him always. But during those days, I don't like the smell :-), and then I came to know that it kills of bacteria and yeast and that's what causes smell. Even insects bites or any wounds happened in farm land, used to apply coconut oil first and then followed by other medications, if any. Yes, because of antimicrobial properties, it helps to heal faster. According to Ayurveda, applying Coconut oil on to the skin aids in wound healing and manages scars, blemishes etc. due to its Snigdha (oily) and Ropan (healing) properties Nowadays we are spending lot on beauty products, but not following on our traditional approach. Even when we make wheat upma, will add coconut oil finally for distinct aroma and unique taste to the dish.
